Zero Waste Condoms: Is It Possible? The Best Conscious and Vegan Protection

Have you ever seen those people who fit all of their trash in a jar and wonder… how about sex – are they using zero waste condoms? Otherwise, where are the wrappers from their years of enjoying life? Compared to fruit sticker labels, empty condom wrappers are less likely to make it onto the polished social feed, sex is a normal and healthy part of any consenting adult’s life. And it’s also important to stay safe! So how do we go about ‘doing it’ sustainably? Here’s everything you need to know about low waste, safe condoms.

Are zero waste condoms even possible?

In short, no. A reusable condom would not be sanitary and also probably wouldn’t feel very good either. However, there are better choices than traditional condoms.

Most condoms are made from natural rubber, plastics, parabens, and chemicals. They’re packaged in plastic. They also often contain nitrosamines, which are a known carcinogen that can be exposed to the body during sex.

More sustainable condoms are made from natural rubber from a fair trade certified plantation. They also often skip the toxic dyes, fragrances, and nitrosamines.

Apart from condoms, people who menstruate may also use an IUD, birth control, dental dam, or other forms of contraception. However, all of these forms of birth control do not protect against sexually transmitted diseases and create some amount of waste. With that said, any form of birth control is a lot more sustainable in the long run than unwanted pregnancies.
