Thank you for including reducing plastic as part of your New Year’s determination.

Plastic pollution ends up in the ground, in the air, and in the sea – where it is at risk of animals and marine life ingesting it. Plastic takes hundreds of years to disappear. Therefore, we’re focussing on reducing it this month.

On our first day of the January 2021 challenge, we need to channel dedication with a powerful mindset. We will try to avoid as much plastic as possible, regardless of what stumbling blocks might come our way. Each day we need to think about what is necessary – what can we swap, refuse and decline?

Especially in these difficult times, it is essential to not be too hard on ourselves if something goes wrong. There have been countless occasions when I’ve transitioned to a more plastic-free lifestyle where things have gone awry. I’ve had to break long-established habits, asked for no straw/bag/receipt for one to come and forgotten to bring a reusable. It’s all part of the process. Let’s focus on our positive actions.
