Get ready for a super easy DIY lip balm recipe that you can make in just 10 minutes!
Wherever I go, I always keep a lip balm to hand. It’s my most favourite essential for dry lips. With all this application, it’s inevitable for us not to consume a little bit of lip balm here and there, so it’s important to know what the ingredients are. That’s why I’ve started to make my own.
This recipe for a very easy DIY lip balm is really too easy not to try. It’s perfect for a starting attempt that may inspire lots of other fun recipes. For this lip balm, you only need coconut and beeswax. If you’re feeling fancy, you can add a tiny drop of peppermint essential oils too. I love the zingy minty smell and feel.
DIY lip balm is also great as little gifts. Trust me, these adorable homemade pots go down so well. It’s easy to whip up a large batch and save them to hand out to friends, family and colleagues.
What you Will need:
Ingredients
- 2 parts of coconut oil
- 1 part of grated beeswax
- Peppermint essential oils – optional
Equipment
There are plenty of options for a decent lip balm container. I chose to repurpose an old jam pot that I took from when I enjoyed it at a hotel breakfast. You can purchase specific lip balm tins like these, which are a great size or use up a lip balm and keep the container when it’s empty.
How to make DIY lip balm with just coconut and beeswax
If the beeswax is in a lump instead of pellets, grate off the amount you need. If it is just one pot for yourself, you can start with one teaspoon of grated beeswax to 2 teaspoons of coconut oil.
Easy kitchen stove method
Add all the ingredients into a heat-friendly bowl. Place the bowl into a pan of boiling water. Heat all the ingredients until they’ve combined into a pourable liquid. Take it off the heat and add a few drops of essential oils. Whilst it’s melted, pour the ingredients into your chosen pot. I love using my glass Pyrex measuring jug for pouring.
Now you have the option to add a few drops of peppermint essential oil to your mixture and stir it in depending on how big your batch is. Don’t go overboard with your essentials oils, as they can be irritating. The recommendations on essential oil quantity are generally around 2% of any recipe. Assuming 20 drops of essential oils = 1 gram (a rough approximation), you’d want to use 20 drops of essential oil in a 50g batch of lip balm to be within a safer zone.
And you’re done. Super easy, right?
Easy microwave method
Use a microwave instead of a stove to warm up the ingredients. Add all the beeswax and coconut into a microwave friendly mixing jug. Then heat it until the beeswax and coconut have melted. Either pour straight into your pot or add the peppermint essential oil.
If you don’t fancy making one, I recommend Herbfarmacy for plastic-free lip balm. “Lip Nurse” is 100% organic ingredients.
