Celebrating Halloween calls for candy, decorations, costumes, food – and most importantly, plastic free Halloween ideas! If you’re living a more eco-conscious lifestyle, there’s no need to miss out on the holiday excitement. In fact, finding thoughtful, plastic free ways to celebrate can actually lead to fun new traditions and more time with friends and family! Here are my top tips.
Plastic Freee Halloween Decorations
As holidays come and go, we inevitably see plastic decorations fill the store shelves, only to either be marked down at the store or eventually be forgotten and thrown out at the end of the season.
There’s no need for this when there are plenty of naturally plastic free decorations to choose from. Decorate your front porch and home with pumpkins, gourds, corn stalks, pine cones, and anything else you desire! You can also decorate with lots of pillar candles and home goods. Check out your local thrift store for candlestick holders, spooky old portraits in wooden frames, and funky knick-knacks.
It’s also fun to make a scarecrow with your friends or family. Gather old clothing, like a plaid top and jeans, as well as leaves to stuff the clothing with. Carve a pumpkin for his head and sit him up on a bench or chair outside your home for everyone to see!
Halloween Foods
If you’re carving pumpkins this season, don’t let all the good insides go to waste! Check out my blog post on what to do with the seeds here. Any pumpkins that haven’t been drawn on or carved can also go on to make delicious seasonal foods, like roasted pumpkin soup or pumpkin pie. Just be sure to serve these delicacies in reusable bowls and plates!
DIY Costumes
The majority of store-bought costumes are made of polyester – a synthetic material that contributes to micro-plastic pollution and will never biodegrade. Try making your own at home, instead.
Most people have items already on hand for classic costumes, such as cats, witches, ghosts, skeletons, or zombies. Consider these plastic free Halloween ideas for costumes:
- Use a white sheet to become a ghost, cutting holes for the eyes and mouth.
- Wear sleek, fitted black clothing to become a cat, drawing on facial features like whiskers.
- Use white paint or chalk to draw a skeleton on old black clothing and use face paint to complete the look.
- Put together a witch’s outfit with an old voluminous skirt and peasant top. Check out thrift stores for accessories like a wand or witch hat – just be sure to clean them before wearing!
- Shred old clothing to create a zombie look. Add fake blood or food coloring to the clothing and use dramatic face makeup to complete the costume.
Plastic Free Halloween Candy
It takes a bit of extra effort, but there are plenty of alternative candy options that are also plastic free! Check out my blog post here for more on that
Be sure to come prepared with reusable bags when trick-or-treating! You might decorate plain paper shopping bags or cloth reusable totes with paint. Draw bats, pumpkins, or whatever you like!
Whether you’re celebrating Halloween at home, going trick-or-treating, or heading out on the town, it’s easy to be eco-friendly! With these plastic free Halloween ideas and a little extra effort, you’ll make an impact while also having fun.
