How to Turn Christmas Cards Into Christmas Tags (Easy DIY!)

How to Turn Christmas Cards into Christmas Tags

Every year, you inevitably get a stack of Christmas cards – a sweet thought, but these cards are usually only useful for a few minutes before you dispose of them. Rather than sending them to the landfill, you can actually repurpose the cards and give them a second life. In this blog, you’ll learn how to turn Christmas cards into Christmas tags. It’s super easy and also eliminates the need to purchase Christmas tags. Win-win!

How to Turn Christmas Cards Into Christmas Tags

This DIY can take just a few minutes, but there may be some prep time as you gather supplies. This year, collect Christmas cards. You might have enough to use as Christmas tags this year. If not, you can always use them next year as you collect more. This is also a fun project to do with kids.

You will need:

  • Collection of Christmas cards
  • Scissors or craft paper punch, like this one
  • Hole punch, like this one
  • Ribbon or twine

Instructions:

  1. Reviewing your cards, decide which part of the design you’d like to use. You can likely get more than one Christmas tag out of each card, depending on what shape you cut out of the cards. If you’re using a craft paper punch, you’ll get uniform shapes. You can also use scissors and cut your choice of shape – circle, square, etc. Usually, the front of the card works best as the outside has imagery and the inside is blank.
  2. Cut your desired shape out of the card. If using scissors to freehand the cut, you might draw on the card to guide you.
  3. Using the hole punch, add a small hole at the top of your new Christmas tag.
  4. Loop a short piece of ribbon or twine through the small hole, and attach it to your present.
  5. Write who the present is for, and any other messaging, on the blank side of the Christmas tag.

After Christmas

When Christmas is over, there are a few things you could do with the Christmas tags. Most Christmas cards are paper, so the tags could be recycled or composted once you remove the ribbon. If they have a shine to them, they might contain polyurethane, which would make them unrecyclable. In this case, it’s best to try to reuse them and throw them away once they’ve reached their full use.

If you can assign a design to each gift (for example, snowman tag goes to dad’s present, snowflake tag goes to mom’s present), there’s no need to write on them and you can reuse them for years to come. Whether you wrote on them or not, you may also use the Christmas tags as decoration for your tree.

As you can see, there are so many opportunities to use what we have and give things a new life.
