Did you know you can make plant stick names with a bamboo toothbrush? If you’re someone who loves to garden or is experimenting with regrowing plant scraps, you likely need a way to distinguish one plant from the other. Rather than buying brand new materials to label your plants, use what you have on hand! This is a perfect way to reuse old bamboo toothbrushes.

Why use a bamboo toothbrush?

It’s no secret that we’re facing a very big plastic problem. No matter where you live in the world, you’ve likely seen plastic litter. Of all the plastic that we produce in the world, 50% is thrown away after a single use. Of all our plastic, only 9% ends up being recycled.

Where does all the plastic go? It ends up in our oceans, where it causes the death of a million marine animals each year. It also ends up in our drinking water, and even in the air. It has become such a big problem that humans are now eating about 40 pounds of plastic in their lifetime.

This is why every step we take to swap traditional plastic items for more eco-friendly alternatives is key. The average person uses about 300 toothbrushes in their lifetime. The solution is simple – switch to a bamboo toothbrush! Once you’re ready to switch to a new brush, you can extend its life by making plant stick names.

The bamboo stick hack is incredibly easy and fun to do! Here’s how to make plant stick names with a bamboo toothbrush:

1. Pluck the bristles off of the toothbrush

First, use a pair of tweezers to pull the bristles off of the brush head. You may need to twist as you pull, but they should come out easily. If they are plastic bristles, add them to your recycling by putting them inside a plastic bottle or container. When they’re all removed, move on to step 2!

2. Clean the remaining bamboo stick

Clean any toothpaste residue off of the bamboo with some gentle dish soap under warm water. This is especially important if you want to paint the stick later.

3. Decorate and label

Now, the fun part! You have the option to decorate your bamboo stick or keep it wooden and simply add the plant name. If you have old paint lying around, now is the time to use it up! Add as many funky designs as your heart desires.

4. Label your plants

Push the bottom of the stick into the dirt of your plant and you’re all done! You’ve successfully created plant stick names with a bamboo toothbrush.

It’s important to note, you can also save old popsicle sticks and use them to label your plants as well. Be sure to decorate them all the same!
