Plastic Free Kettle: Why You Should Switch & Where to Find One

If youโ€™re a tea drinker, itโ€™s time to make the switch to a plastic-free kettle. Plastic can have harmful effects on both our health and the environment. By choosing a plastic-free option, you can have a positive impact on your health as well as our planet!

Why switch to a plastic-free kettle?

Plastic kettles, especially those made from BPA-based plastic, can leach chemicals or phthalates into your water as it boils, meaning those chemicals end up in your drink. BPAs are known as endocrine disruptors, with one study finding that putting boiling water in plastic bottles releases chemicals 55 times faster than room-temperature water. That means that the same thing can happen when boiling water directly in plastic-based kettles.

Even BPA-free kettles aren’t entirely risk-free. Research shows that the plastic used to replace BPAs, such as BPF, BPS, and BPAF, can also affect fertility and harm children’s health. These BPA alternatives share the same chemical base (bisphenol) and differ only slightly from BPAs, yet theyโ€™re still often marketed as โ€œsafe.โ€

Six Great Plastic-Free Kettle Options

In general, stainless steel and glass kettles are the safest options. Here are a few I recommend:

This stovetop kettle is made from durable stainless steel, holds 2.5L, and works on all hob types, including induction. It has a wooden handle and minimal plastic parts and the cheerful yellow and floral print brings some brightness to your kitchen! Pop it on your stove, and listen for the gentle whistle it lets out once it’s ready. Hand wash only and avoid high heat to keep it in good shape.

This kettle is mostly stainless steel, with a bit of plastic on the handle and lid. However, none of the plastic components come in contact with water, and it’s built to last. It’s compatible with all stoves, including induction, and it doesn’t whistle when ready.

This Masterclass kettle is almost entirely from stainless steel, except for the handle and lid knob. It works on any stove type and even over a campfire, perfect for home or outdoor adventures. With a 2L capacity, you can boil as much or as little as you need.

The Ascot kettle is made from borosilicate glass with a stainless steel filter, so no plastic ever touches your boiling water. The stainless steel filter is 100% BPA-free too, making this a convenient and safe option for your daily cup of tea.

This electric kettle is a sleek essential for your daily routine. It heats water quickly with rapid boil technology, perfect for busy mornings or quick brews. It’s made from durable stainless steel and is completely BPA-free, meaning itโ€™s a safer, longer-lasting choice. It even comes with a spare limescale filter, to keep your water fresh and kettle clean.
