If you’re a tea drinker, it’s time to make the switch to a plastic free kettle. Plastic has many known negative effects on both our bodies and the environment. By choosing a plastic free kettle, you can have a positive impact on your health as well as our planet!
Why switch to a plastic free kettle?
Plastic kettles made from BPA plastic can leach chemicals or phthalates into your water as it boils, which then end up in your drink. We know that these chemicals are endocrine disruptors. One study found that plastic bottles filled with boiling water release chemicals at a rate 55 times greater than when filled with room temperature water. That means that the same effect is taking place when you boil water in a kettle where the plastic comes into contact with the water.
Kettles that do contain plastic are BPA-free, however, research has shown that the plastic used to replace BPA, such as BPF, BPS, and BPAF, can also interfere with fertility and have negative impacts on children. These BPA replacements all start with “BP” because they are made from the same basic chemical structure – bisphenol. The replacements have very slight differences from BPA, yet they’re marketed as “safe.”
Six great plastic free kettle options
In general, stainless steel and glass kettles are the safest options. Here are a few I recommend:
This kettle is 100% borosilicate glass, which you can use on any kind of stove except for induction stoves. It has a large handle for comfort and is completely plastic free! It’s important to remember that its fragile. It also doesn’t whistle, so you’ll need to keep an eye on it when boiling water.
This kettle contains mostly stainless steel, though it does have a little bit of plastic on the handle and lid. However, it should last you years, and the plastic components never touch the water. This kettle works on all stoves, including induction, and does not whistle.
This Masterclass kettle is entirely from stainless steel, except for the handle and lid knob. It can be used on any stove type and can also be used over a campfire. It’s got a 2-liter capacity, so you can make as little or as much boiling water as needed.
The Ascot kettle is borosilicate glass, with silicone joints and a plastic base. The kettle is extremely fast boiling, which takes just four minutes.
