July 15th is National Give Something Away Day – do you know what you’ll give away? Much like the name implies, the day is all about giving something you no longer need to those who it would better serve. This holiday is especially important to celebrate, as it emphasizes the importance of finding new life for items, rather than throwing them away.
It can be as simple as giving a shirt to a friend, or as big as donating a piece of furniture to a charity shop. Even better, do both! Most of us have extra items lying around at home that we don’t need but would mean the world to others.

Go through your closet
We’re all guilty of having items in our closet that we’ve only worn once or twice before forgetting about. Perhaps you even have pieces that still have the tags attached. This is the perfect time to take an inventory of what you have and give the items that don’t get any wear to someone in need! That might be a friend, an organization, or a thrift store. Here is a list of my favorite places to donate clothes to.
Check bathroom cupboards
Any items you give away on National Give Something Away Day should be in good condition, especially bathroom items. With that said, many of us have unopened personal care and makeup products in our bathroom that we’ve forgotten about or just never used. Give them to a friend or an organization.
Check kids rooms
Kids move through stages of life fast, and they accumulate things at an equal rate. They grow out of items quickly as well, so children’s rooms are a great place to find items to give away to family, friends, or charity. Find a list of places to donate toys here.
Go through your workout gear
If you’re a home workout enthusiast, you’ve probably accumulated a bunch of wellness gear – yoga mats, dumbbells, kettlebells, bands, foam rollers, workout videos, etc. Now is a great time to give away items that have gone unused for more than a year.
Declutter the garage
Have a garage or a garden shed? Go through the items stored inside and see what treasure you’ve forgotten about! Perhaps a neighbor would benefit from your extra pair of gardening gloves or unused gas cans.
Do an inventory of your pantry
Overflowing pantry? Canned goods are a great way to give back to your local homeless shelters, and they’re always in need.
Pay for someone’s meal
Another way to make someone’s day is to buy them a meal. Whether it’s buying a meal for a homeless person or paying for the car behind you in the drive-thru, that kindness will go a long way.
By participating in National Give Something Away Day, you’ll make someone else happy and likely lighten your own burden. It’s an excellent cause with an important meaning behind it: we don’t need new items, we need to use what we already have. What are you giving away today? Leave a comment below and let me know!
